With homeschooling, or "elective home education", growing rapidly across the UK, many families are exploring the freedom and flexibility it offers.

In this article, we’re going to talk about homeschooling in the UK, including legal guidance, and how you can ensure your child gets a brilliant education.

The Legalities of Homeschooling

In the UK, parents are legally responsible for ensuring their children receive a full-time, efficient, and suitable education, even if it happens outside the traditional school system. More on the Gov legislation website here.

There's no requirement to follow the National Curriculum, but the education must be appropriate to the child's age, ability, aptitude, and any special educational needs.

Families do not need to notify local authorities unless the child is subject to a school attendance order or has an EHCP and attends a special school by council arrangement. However, local councils may make informal enquiries to ensure the education is suitable.

As of summer 2023, there were about 97,000 homeschooled children in England, reflecting a growing shift that started during the pandemic.

Why Families Choose Homeschooling

Families choose homeschooling for a range of reasons, from seeking a tailored, interest-led learning environment to addressing gaps in traditional schooling, especially for children with special needs.

Some parents cite lifestyle choices or philosophical beliefs, while others seek to safeguard their children’s emotional and mental well-being.

Is Homeschooling Right for Your Child?

Homeschooling in the UK is a legal, flexible, and increasingly popular education path. The law allows a personalised approach, provided education is appropriate and meaningful.
